China is too big to be one wine region. Its vineyards stretch from the Yellow Sea coast to the edge of the Gobi, and from the loess plateau to the foothills of the Himalayas. This guide walks through the Chinese wine regions you can actually taste at Vinflow Wine Bar & Bistro in Singapore, region by region.

Map of China marking the seven Chinese wine regions in the Vinflow collection: Xinjiang, Gansu, Ningxia, Yunnan, Shanxi, Hebei and Shandong, plus Liaoning

Vinflow's collection brings together 32 Chinese wines from 15 wineries across seven regions. Think of this page as the map; our Chinese wine collection in Singapore is the territory. Wine selection, vintages and availability are subject to change.

Ningxia: the Helan Mountain foothills

Ningxia, as illustrated in The Chinese Wine Edit.

Ningxia sits in north-central China on the Yellow River, in dry, high-sunshine country where the Helan Mountain shelters vineyards on its eastern side. Winters are cold enough that many growers bury their vines for protection, and the region is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Gernischt and Marselan, alongside some Chardonnay and Riesling.

It is also where most of Vinflow's Chinese producers are based: Silver Heights, Domaine Pushang, Huwei, Fei Tswei, Kanaan, Xige Estate and He Dong Estate. Kanaan's Riesling 2024 and Fei Tswei's Lava Cabernet Franc 2021 both appear in our Premium Chinese Wine Flight. For the full picture, read our Ningxia wine guide.

Xinjiang wine: Tianshan snow-melt and sunshine

Xinjiang, as illustrated in The Chinese Wine Edit.

Xinjiang wine comes from China's far north-west, a vast, dry region of mountains and basins with a continental climate: hot, bright summers and cold winters. Vineyards depend on mountain snow-melt for water, which is why they cluster near the Tianshan range.

Tiansai Vineyard, established in 2010 in the Yanqi Basin, is enclosed by mountains on three sides and a lake on the fourth. At Vinflow its Skyline of Gobi Chardonnay Muscat 2023 (floral, fresh and gently fruity) is in the flight, and the Skyline of Gobi Grand Reserve Marselan 2019 is published as mulberry, black cherry and spice. Petit Mont also grows in Yili, and its Tianshan Mountain Cuvée Prestige Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 is described as cassis, plum and oak spice.

Gansu wine: the Hexi Valley

Gansu, as illustrated in The Chinese Wine Edit.

Gansu wine comes from the Hexi Corridor, a long, narrow strip of oases running between the Qilian mountains and the deserts to the north. It is dry, sunny and tough on vines, which is part of its appeal for growers who want concentrated fruit.

Ease Estate is in Minqin, Wuwei, beside the Hongya Mountain Reservoir where the Tengger and Badain Jaran deserts meet, and launched its Being Real range in 2017. Vinflow lists its Being Real Classico Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2021, with published notes of black cherry, black plum, butter and vanilla.

Yunnan wine: Himalayan highlands

Yunnan, as illustrated in The Chinese Wine Edit.

Yunnan wine is the most surprising entry on the map. In the south-west, bordering Tibet and Myanmar, altitude does what latitude cannot: vineyards in the Himalayan highlands are cooled by height, and some are planted in small terraced plots on steep slopes. If you have searched for Himalayan wine, this is the region.

Three producers appear at Vinflow:

  • Bauzuan: terraced vineyards at more than 2,200 metres. Célèbre White 2022 (Chardonnay: citrus, peach, fennel), ALLOFME Rosé 2023 (Cabernet Sauvignon: red berries, citrus) and Célèbre Red 2018 (blackcurrant, dark fruit).
  • Shangri-La Wine Estate: highland vineyards around Shangri-La. Sacred Legend Chardonnay 2022 is published as citrus blossom, peach and gentle oak.
  • Petit Mont: Baima Snow Mountain Deqin Cuvée Prestige Chardonnay 2024 and Baima Snow Mountain Yanjing 2022 (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot: blackcurrant, plum).

Shanxi wine: Taigu and the loess plateau

Shanxi, as illustrated in The Chinese Wine Edit.

Shanxi wine is grown on China's loess plateau, an area of deep, wind-blown soil. Grace Vineyard is in Taigu, about 40 km south of Taiyuan, where a dry continental climate, sandy loam and wide day-night temperature swings suit quality wine. The winery has been praised by Jancis Robinson, James Halliday, Wine Spectator and Decanter.

Its Recalling The Year 2025, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Marselan with fresh fruit and a supple texture, is part of the flight. The list also includes Deep Blue 2021, Chairman’s Reserve 2018 and the Angelina Brut Reserve 2014, a Chardonnay sparkling wine with pineapple, toast and honey notes.

Hebei wine: Huailai, north-west of Beijing

Hebei, as illustrated in The Chinese Wine Edit.

Hebei wine is the capital's neighbour. Huailai lies north-west of Beijing, and Chapter and Verse is based there, focusing on two familiar varieties in its Select range.

Both are on the wall now, subject to change: Select Chardonnay 2018 (orchard fruit, citrus) and Select Merlot 2016 (plum, rounded fruit). For anyone new to Chinese wine, familiar grapes on tap make a straightforward first taste.

Shandong wine: the Penglai coast

Illustration of vineyards in Shandong
Shandong, as illustrated in The Chinese Wine Edit.

Shandong wine is shaped by the sea. The peninsula juts into the Bohai and Yellow Seas, giving a maritime climate that is milder and more humid than the inland regions above, with summer rain a challenge for growers. Longting, a boutique winery established in 2009 on the Penglai coast, is committed to natural and biodynamic farming and explores French varieties such as Petit Manseng, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Marselan.

Vinflow lists its Rising Light Collection Petit Manseng 2024, published as passionfruit, honeydew and citrus: an unusual grape well worth a glass.

Another region to know: Liaoning

Liaoning, in China's cold north-east, is best known as a destination for icewine, usually made by picking frozen grapes in deep winter. Vinflow does not currently list a Liaoning wine, but it belongs on any map of Chinese wine regions.

Where to try it in Singapore

Vinflow Wine Bar & Bistro at 55 Keong Saik Road is home to Singapore's only 32-tap wine wall, with Chinese wines alongside Europe and the New World. Currently on tap are Chapter and Verse Select Chardonnay 2018 (Hebei), Chapter and Verse Select Merlot 2016 (Hebei) and HUWEI “Zhuan” Marselan 2021 (Ningxia, with black fruit, chocolate and spice). Tap selection is subject to change and availability.

To cover several regions in one sitting, add the Premium Chinese Wine Flight: a +$20++ top-up to regular-priced free-flow ordered 5–8 pm. It brings four different Chinese wines, one glass each: Kanaan Riesling 2024 and Fei Tswei Lava Cabernet Franc 2021 (Ningxia), Tiansai Skyline of Gobi Chardonnay Muscat 2023 (Xinjiang) and Grace Vineyard Recalling The Year 2025 (Shanxi). Refills are not included, promotional packages are excluded and the flight is subject to change. See promotions for free-flow details, or private events for groups.

Tasting cues here are published or typical profiles rather than our own tasting assessments. Pairings are only suggestions; our Chinese wine food pairing guide has ideas for shareable plates, and the Marselan guide and is Chinese wine good? cover the grape and the quality question. Wine service is for guests of legal drinking age.
