Ningxia is the name Chinese wine drinkers reach for first, and for good reason. This guide explains where it is, what makes the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains such a distinctive place to grow grapes, and which Ningxia wines you can try at Vinflow Wine Bar & Bistro in Singapore.

Ningxia can feel unfamiliar if you are used to thinking of wine in terms of France, Italy or Australia. A little geography and a few tasting cues go a long way. Below we cover the basics, then walk through the seven Ningxia producers on Vinflow's list. It is part of our wider Chinese wine collection in Singapore.
Where is Ningxia, and what is the Helan Mountain wine region?
Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region lies in north-central China, on the upper reaches of the Yellow River. Its capital is Yinchuan. The wine-growing area runs along the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains (Helan Shan), a long range that shelters the plain from the deserts to the west.
When people say "Helan Mountain wine", they usually mean wines grown on these eastern slopes. Many wineries cluster in the area, and several of the producers below describe their vineyards in exactly those terms. It is a young wine region by European standards, with most of the estates in this guide founded between about 2007 and 2017, according to their own accounts.
Why does Ningxia suit winegrowing?

Several well-established features of the region help explain why it attracts winemakers:
- Altitude. Vineyards sit on elevated ground at the foot of the mountains. Silver Heights, for example, reports vineyards at around 1,200 metres.
- A dry continental climate. Low rainfall and clear skies mean plenty of sunshine for ripening and generally healthy fruit.
- Wide day-to-night temperature swings. Warm days build ripeness while cool nights help grapes keep freshness.
- Stony, free-draining ground at the foothills. Silver Heights describes stony soils and abundant sunshine as the source of the spicy style typical of Helan Mountain.
The flip side is winter. Ningxia's winters are cold enough that growers commonly bury their vines under soil each year to protect them from the frost, then uncover them in spring. It is extra work, and it is part of what makes the region's wines distinctive.
Which grapes are grown in Ningxia?
Ningxia is best known for red wine, and Bordeaux varieties dominate: Cabernet Sauvignon is widely planted, with Merlot and Cabernet Franc alongside. Marselan, a cross of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache created in France, has become a signature grape in China. Pinot Noir has its supporters too. For whites, Chardonnay is the most common, and Riesling is grown by a few producers. You may also see Cabernet Gernischt, a red variety long associated with China.
If you want a deeper look at one grape, our guide to the Marselan grape covers it in more detail. For a broader view of how Ningxia compares with other provinces, see our overview of Chinese wine regions.
What does Ningxia wine taste like?
Styles vary by producer, vintage and grape, so treat the following as a rough map rather than a rule. Ningxia Cabernet Sauvignon tends to show blackcurrant and dark fruit, sometimes with mint or spice. Marselan is often described as dark-berried and floral. Merlot leans plummy and rounded. The whites we list, such as Chardonnay and Riesling, point to citrus, orchard fruit and blossom. The tasting cues in this guide are the published profiles for each wine, not our own tasting assessment.

It is currently on the tap wall, so you can pour a taste, a half glass or a full glass, subject to availability.

He Dong Estate (贺东酒庄)
A Ningxia estate in the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains. Vinflow lists its Zi Que Yu Xi Merlot 2022, with plum and rounded fruit.
A note on Petit Mont: the winery also has vineyards on Ningxia's Helan Mountain East, but the Petit Mont wines we list come from Yunnan and Xinjiang, so we have not counted it among the Ningxia producers above.

How to taste Ningxia wine: a simple plan
You do not need to know much about Chinese wine to enjoy it. A few easy comparisons work well:
- Start with the Riesling. Kanaan's Riesling shows how a cool-nights climate can give lifted, fresh whites.
- Compare Marselan from two producers. Silver Heights and Fei Tswei both list a Marselan, and Huwei's Zhuan is on tap, so you can taste how winemaking changes one grape.
- Try Ningxia Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc side by side. The Summit and Lava Cabernet Sauvignon sit next to Lava Cabernet Franc on the list.
- Bring food. Order a few shareable plates and use the wines as part of dinner. Pairings are only suggestions, and our guide to Chinese wine and food pairing has more ideas.
