Search for the best Chinese wine and you will find plenty of opinions and very few straight answers. This guide takes a more useful route: it looks at the Chinese wineries that named critics and competitions have singled out, explains what makes each one interesting, and shows how to taste them at Vinflow Wine Bar & Bistro in Singapore.

Is there a “best” Chinese wine?
Not in any objective sense, and we would be wary of anyone who says otherwise. Chinese wine spans desert-edge foothills, high plateaux and coastal vineyards, and it is made from everything from Riesling to Cabernet Gernischt. A crisp white and a structured red are simply different pleasures.
So instead of a ranking, think of this page as a shortlist of the most acclaimed and critically recognised producers on our list. Every piece of praise below is attributed to the person or competition that gave it, and as reported by the winery or in the published producer profiles we work from. If you are new to the category, our honest guide Is Chinese wine good? is a good companion read.
Which Chinese wineries have drawn the most critical attention?
Four producers on Vinflow’s list stand out for the recognition that has been recorded about them. Here is what has been said, and by whom.
Silver Heights (银色高地), Ningxia
Silver Heights was founded in 2007 on the eastern slopes of the Helan Mountains, about 48 km from Yinchuan, with vineyards at around 1,200 metres. Jancis Robinson has described it as a rising star of Chinese wine. The winery’s abundant sunshine and stony soils give the spicy style typical of Helan Mountain.
Vinflow lists five Silver Heights wines. Tasting cues are published profiles, not our own assessment:
- Chardonnay Reserve 2024 — citrus and orchard fruit.
- Jiayuan Marselan 2023 — dark berries and floral notes.
- Jiayuan Pinot Noir 2023 — cherry and red berries.
- The Summit 2022 (Cabernet Sauvignon) — blackcurrant and dark fruit.
- Emma’s Reserve 2021 (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot) — dark fruit, freshness and oak.
Kanaan Winery (迦南美地), Ningxia
Kanaan was founded in 2011 by Wang Fang, who studied in Germany and invited German winemakers to Ningxia. Its wines have been recommended by Jancis Robinson, Bernard Burtschy and Ian D’Agata. That German connection shows in the glass: the winery’s white on our list is a Riesling.
- Riesling 2024 — grapefruit, green apple and blossom. This is one of the four wines in the Premium Chinese Wine Flight.
- Black Beauty 2018 (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot) — dark berries and plum.
Grace Vineyard (怡园酒庄), Shanxi
Grace Vineyard is in Taigu, about 40 km south of Taiyuan on the loess plateau, where a dry continental climate, sandy loam and wide day-night temperature swings suit quality wine. Its wines have been praised by Jancis Robinson, James Halliday, Wine Spectator and Decanter. It is the only Shanxi producer on our list, and the only one pouring a sparkling wine.
- Angelina Brut Reserve 2014 (Chardonnay) — pineapple, toast and honey.
- Recalling The Year 2025 (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Marselan) — fresh fruit and a supple texture. It is in the Premium Chinese Wine Flight.
- Deep Blue 2021 (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Marselan) — plum and dark berries.
- Chairman’s Reserve 2018 (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc) — cherry, cassis and dried herbs.
Domaine Pushang (蒲尚酒庄), Ningxia
A boutique family estate established in 2009 and known in China as a “Marselan expert”. It works in small batches with low yields and minimal intervention, and the winery reports Gold Medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards. That is the winery’s own report; we have not independently checked individual results. On our list: Chun Hua Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, with black fruit, mint and coffee.
What makes a Chinese wine brand notable beyond the critics?
Critical praise is one signal. Others are about place and philosophy, and a few more producers on our list stand out on those terms.
- Huwei Winery (虎薇酒庄), Ningxia. Established in 2014 in the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains, with hand harvesting, gravity-fed fermentation and French oak ageing. Its HUWEI “Zhuan” Marselan 2021 offers black fruit, chocolate and spice, and is currently on our tap wall.
- Fei Tswei (长和翡翠), Ningxia. Established in 2013 with estate-grown, hand-harvested grapes. The Lava Cabernet Franc 2021 (mint, plum and raspberry, with firm tannins) is in the flight.
- Tiansai Vineyard (天塞酒庄), Xinjiang. Established in 2010 in the Yanqi Basin at the foot of the Tianshan mountains, enclosed by mountains on three sides and a lake on the fourth. Its Skyline of Gobi Chardonnay Muscat 2023 is floral, crisp and gently fruity, and is in the flight.
- Longting (龙亭酒庄), Shandong. A boutique winery established in 2009 on the Penglai coast, committed to natural and biodynamic farming. Its Rising Light Collection Petit Manseng 2024 brings passionfruit, honeydew and citrus.
- Bauzuan (宝庄), Yunnan. Terraced vineyards at more than 2,200 metres in the Himalayan highlands, planted in small plots on steep slopes.
- Ease Estate (自在酒庄), Gansu. In Minqin, in the Hexi Valley beside the Hongya Mountain Reservoir where the Tengger and Badain Jaran deserts meet. Its Being Real Classico Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 shows black cherry, black plum, butter and vanilla.

Which famous Chinese wine grape should you try first?
If you want one grape to follow, Marselan, a Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache crossing, is widely seen as China’s signature red. It appears across our list, from Silver Heights and Fei Tswei to Tiansai and Huwei. Our guide to the Marselan grape goes deeper. Cabernet lovers can start with Chinese Cabernet Sauvignon, and Ningxia fans will like our Ningxia wine guide.

How to build your own “best of” tasting
- Start with Riesling. Taste Kanaan’s Riesling first to see a fresh, lifted white from Ningxia.
- Compare Cabernets. Silver Heights’ The Summit, Pushang’s Chun Hua and Fei Tswei’s Lava Cabernet Sauvignon let you compare one grape from three estates.
- Add something unexpected. Try the Longting Petit Manseng or the Tiansai Chardonnay Muscat.
- Add food. Order a few shareable plates; pairings are only suggestions, and our guide to Chinese wine and food pairing has ideas.
